As of 2010, Clayton's population was nearly 10,000 with a population increase of more than 38 percent since 2000. This growth can be attributed to Clayton's great location near the Research Triangle Park area as well as its easy access to major highways, I-40, US 70, US 70 Bypass, I-95, US 64, I-540, US 264 and NC 42.

The Town of Clayton has adopted "A Premier Community for Active Families" as its slogan. In addition to being a great place to live and work, Clayton is a wonderful place to play with entertainment and recreational opportunities to residents and visitors of all ages and a burgeoning artists' community. The 600-seat auditorium at the Clayton Center was renovated from the former Clayton school buildings into a state-of-the-art performance and conference center.
