Sometimes, you just need a vacation! But you don’t have to plan a week away or purchase plane tickets to get the full effect of a little rest and relaxation—not in the Raleigh area, anyway. Day trips around the Triangle are the next-best thing to a true getaway.
These Day Trips Around the Triangle Make the Best Staycation
No hotel needed for these day trips around the Triangle! Hop in the car in the morning, drive a few hours, and be home by bedtime! Here are a few of our favorites.
Wilmington
Travel time: 2 hours
Want to hit the beach? North Carolina might be best known for its secluded white-sand Outer Banks beaches, but there is actually plenty of coastline within an easy day trip of the Raleigh area. The southern coastline of the state, including Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, is actually only about two hours from the city.
The Wilmington area offers a whole lot more than the beach—there’s also a bustling downtown district featuring a Riverwalk, shops, restaurants, galleries, and more.
Greensboro
Travel time: 1.25 hours
It’s only just over an hour away, but as North Carolina’s third-largest city, Greensboro is definitely its own separate world. Once a small town with an interesting past, Greensboro today is filled with art galleries, theatres, museums, and urban parks. It’s also home to one of the state’s top water parks, a thriving college scene, and plenty of good eats, too.
Charlotte
Travel time: 2.5 hours
Raleigh might be North Carolina’s capital, but Charlotte is its largest city, which means you could definitely fill more than a day exploring this vast metropolis. But if a day is all you’ve got, make sure you check off some of Charlotte’s biggest activities—like exploring Uptown or making a splash at the US National Whitewater Center.
Take a scenic stroll along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, grab a bite at a local eatery in Plaza-Midwood, or even catch a show at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center (starting September 5, 2020).
Yadkin Valley
Travel time: 3 hours
Want to get away to wine country? Yadkin Valley might be your ideal trip. Located just a few hours west of Raleigh in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Yadkin Valley comprises of stunning rolling hills and verdant vineyards. This peaceful and largely undeveloped area is home to everything from art and music to hiking and adventure to events and festivals, and is just under an hour from Boone and Blowing Rock.
